Seeing
A community that can see itself.
Seeing starts with the people and the work already here: an honest picture, clear enough to act on, and meant to belong to the people it describes.
The odds · 1 of 7
The town nobody covers.
A third of America’s local newspapers have closed since 2005. Fifty-five million people live where almost no one reports on their own place. What a community can’t see, it can’t shape.
More than the news goes missing.
So does the record of who’s working on what, what was tried last time, which building sits empty, and which need nobody is meeting. Without it, every effort starts from scratch, and good groups in the same town pass each other by.
Our starting concern is that people making decisions about a place often lack a clear picture of what’s already happening. Without one, it’s hard to tell a thoughtful choice from one whose consequences no one saw coming.

Our answer: a community that keeps its own record.
It starts with a journal: one person tracking their own work and what they learn. Many journals, shared by choice, become a picture the community owns, not a report written about it.
We approach this at the scale of a region shaped by its natural boundaries, bringing its people, its land, and the work already happening into view.

Seeing can also do harm. A picture of a place drawn from the top down can be used on a community instead of by it. So we’re designing the journal to start with one person keeping their own journal, and for people to control what they contribute to any shared picture.

How it connects
Seeing, acting, and governing inform one another. A shared picture can help people choose a next step, and what happens next can change both the picture and the agreements.

What a community sees can give acting a starting point: who’s already moving, what’s missing, where two efforts could help each other. It can give governing evidence about whether an agreement did what people hoped. And what comes back from acting and governing becomes the next thing to look at.

A clearer picture can reveal possibilities, but it can’t by itself carry out the work or authorize a decision. That’s why seeing is being developed alongside acting and governing, not ahead of them.

Where it stands
A working prototype.
The journal is a working prototype you can use today, built by one founder working with AI tools. The shared picture is being designed with the people who will use it. Join the Spira beta and help shape both.
